Knots, Time Landscape

June KIM has been working for over 10 years on updating the Asian belief in the red thread of destiny: ‘An invisible red thread connects all those who are destined to meet one day…’ Her work reflects a digital transformation of beliefs a relationships, driven by the acceleration of communication methods, especially social media.

The artist holds a deep conviction: this thread has become real with technological evolution. Today, algorithms create these connections between individuals, particularly through social media. In Knots, Time Landscape, the artist materializes an iteration of her analysis of Facebook data to present her tree of potential knowledge.

Each element is carefully chosen and guided by the philosophy of Yin and Yang. The solid and artificial plexiglass contrasts with the soft, natural thread, while the mathematically driven digital process stands in opposition to the artisanal, spontaneous process of sewing.

JUNE KIM

June KIM (born in 1987 in South Korea) is an artist who creates phygital installations made of red threads, based on her social media data. Her work explores an ancient Asian belief: ‘An invisible red thread connects at birth those who are destined to meet.’ The two people connected by this thread are destined to be together, regardless of place, time, or circumstance. June KIM’s works offer a new dimension to this belief, which is also found in the works of artists like Chiharu Shiota and David Černý. For KIM, the red thread theory — the Asian equivalent of Destiny — is no longer just a belief, but a tangible reality.  Humanity has invented Destiny, and these invisible red threads now exist in the form of algorithms, creating connections between individuals in the digital age.
